Common Romulanoid Pathophysiologies

With in recent years, great strides have been made in the field of Romulan medicine. Research into various conditions and diseases as well as the development of new medical treatments have greatly improved the overall heath of the citizens of the Empire. It is of paramount importance that Romulan medical staff remain up-to-date on their knowledge of Romulanoid disease processes and appropriate treatments. To faciliate the continuing education of Romulan medical staff, this instructional site has been prepared.

Although many diseases and illness are specific to a single species, most are common to a varity of similiar species. Therefore each of these common conditions will be listed not only by their Romulan designation (with pronunciation) but also by Federation Standard nomenclature. Conditions which apply only to specific species will be so noted within the text. Unfortunately, very little information is available concerning many of the listed conditions. Research is ongoing and up-dated material will be included in future revisions of this text.

saehfe v 'Anch. illes (saehfe v' Anch'illes) Anchilles fever: A highly contagious, usually fatal disease which spreads rapidly within a planetary population, generally causing widespread and painful deaths in the millions. There is no known cure or treatment.

Daengi aelhih Alt'rian (daengi aelhih Alt'rian) Altarian encephalitis: This disease is caused by a retrovirus that incorporates viral DNA directly into the cells of the host. The virus can lie dormant for years, then activate without warning. Within a very short time period, victims become pyrexic (feverish), comatose, and suffer widespread synaptic degradation.

daengi aelhih Andr'sian (daengi aelhih Andr'sian ) Andronesian Encephalitis - Rare form of encephalitis that affects Romulanoids. It is transmitted by an airborne virus.

hiakh'mne dhat hhaonn (hiakh'mne dhat hhaonn) Apahsia Virus An artifically created virus (created by Bajorian scientist Dekon Elig), originally used as a terroist weapon. Once the virus is into the system, it affects the temporal lobes, dirupts normal communicative processes, and results in variety of secondary infections due to overwhelming amage to the victim's immune response system. Although corophizine has been used sucessfully to treat the more common secondary infection associated with this virus, it often results in coma and eventual death.

hiakh'mne v' Ar'lhian (hiakh'mne v' Ar'lhian) Arelhian flu: A common viral disease native to Arelis that causes respirtatory symptoms, chills, fever, and muscle aches in Romulanoids. It is usually self limiting. Treatment is symptomatic.

hikh'mne v' llhnane orheika (hikh'mne v' llhnane orheika) Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome: An unusual condition caused by a recently discovered intron virus. Victims of Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome develop structural and behavioral characteristics of earlier evolutionary life-forms. This syndrome may affect not only Romulanoid species but also other mammalian life-forms.

hiakh'mne v' Bendii (hiakh'mne v' Bendii) Bendii syndrome: This rare illness sometimes affects Vulcans and, to a lesser extent, Romulans, over the age of 200. The disease is characterized by gradual loss of emotional control. Victims exhibit sudden bursts of emotion and irrational anger which can have wide reaching psychic effects on nearby lifeforms. Vulcans, due to their lifelong habits of emotional self-denial, tend to exhibit much more severe symptoms than their Romulan counterparts.

daiploa v' claehis (daiploa v' claehis) Cold, common: The common cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by any of over 200 viruses. Colds affect all Romulanoid species. Scientists have been searching unsuccessfully for a cure for the common cold for several millenia but report that they are making recent progress. According to Ri'hannsu folklore, ghleten v' Mogai (mogai soup) alleviates the worst of the symptoms.

Saehfe v'k'rrelium (Saehfe v' K'rrelium) Correllium fever: Intense fever, weakness, and chills, are the most common symtoms of this disease which attacks many Romulanoid species.

hiakh'mne d'rne(hiakh'mne D'rne) Darney's disease: This deadly ailment attacks the brain and nervous system of its victims. plaeh age (plaeh age)

Eosinophillia: A well known medical condition that is characterized by an abnormally high count of serum eosinophils, a type of white blood cell in Romulanoids.

hiakh'mne Ivr'sn (hiakh'mne Ivr'sn) Iverson's disease. A chronic disease that causes fatal degeneration of muscular functions in Romulanoids.

Marith'sia (marith'sia) Maresthesia: A usually mild disease exclusive to Romulans and/or Vulcanoid species. However, a new super virulent strain of Maresthesia recently approached pandemic status on Romulus. Early symptoms of this highly contagious plague include high fever and extreme weakness. Irreversible coma and death usually occur shortly after infection. The only known antidote to this super virulent strain of Marethesia is distilled from gran, a plant not known to be native to any planets within the Romulan sphere of influence.

draed lacendt cohae(draed lacendt cohae) Microvirus: A genetically-engineered microorganism designed to attack only cells with a specific DNA sequence.

aelhih hnasae (aelhih hnasae) Neural depletion. Complete loss of electrochemical energy of a Romulanoid brain, resulting in the death of a patient.

ailhih Ilaetus larr'voi aige (ailhih Ileatus larr'voi aige) Neural metaphasic shock. A potentially fatal failure of the neurological system in Romulanoids. Ileatus P'yrox (Ileatus P'yrox) Phyrox plague: Little known disease affecting most Romulanoids.

ehrie hiakh'mne (ehrie hiakh'mne) Plasma plague: A group of deadly virus types that infect the plama components of Romulanoid species.

Replicative fading. A loss of genetic information occuring when an organism is repeatedly cloned.

dreaed lacendt fvaeihh cohae (dreaed lacendt fvaeihh cohae) Retrovirus: a type of virus which reproduce by using a host cell to reproduce DNA, rather than the RNA which most viruses produce.

dhhaol sellien (dhhaol sellien) Somatophysical failure: In Romulanoid physiology, the collapse of all bodily systems. rhienn ishae (rhienn ishae):

ishae rhienn symbal'n (ishae rhienn symbal'n) Symbalene blood burn: A systemic virulent disease, that affects most Romulanoid species.

Delirium produced by exposure to a temporal distortion phenomenon.

hiakh'mne latta T'relln ( hiakh'mne latta T'relln} Terellian Death Syndrome. Disease whose symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, palpitations, and stinging in the lower spine. Nearly always fatal to Romulanoid victims although certain individuals seem to have inherent immunity to the syndrome.

hiakh'mne v'Th'errellian (hiakh'mne v' Th'errillian) Terrellian plague: Dangerously virulent disease. Theta radiation. Deadly radiation that leaks from damaged warp drives.

Hiakh'mne v' Thelusian (hiakh'mne v'Thelusian) Thelusian flu. An exotic but harmless rhinovirus. Symptoms include cough, sneezing, and nasal discharges. There is no known treatment but symptoms usually resolve within seven days. Folk medicines reported to allieviate symptoms include glethen v' Mogai (Romulan equivalent of chicken soup).

nohtho moraere ( nohtho moraere) Transporter psychosis. Rare medical disorder caused by stimulation of neurochemical molecules during transport. Symptoms include severe dehydration, confusion, and paranoia.

daengi v'hhaes (daengi v' hhaes) Tsiolkovsky infection: Variety of water-based virus that creates a dangerous intoxication-like instability in it's Romulanoid victims.
